Licensing and compliance

A licence is the difference between a dispute you can escalate and one you cannot. Here is what it covers, and how to check any operator's for yourself.

01

What a licence actually gives you

A gambling licence is a regulator's permission to offer real-money games to residents of a given market, granted on conditions. The conditions that matter to a player are consistent across serious jurisdictions: player funds must be handled properly, games must use tested random number generators, marketing must not mislead, age and identity checks are mandatory, responsible-play tools must be provided, and there must be a complaints route that ends somewhere outside the company.

That last point is the practical value. With a licensed operator, an unresolved dispute can be escalated to the regulator or an approved alternative-dispute body. Without one, your only recourse is the operator's own goodwill.

Check it yourself in two minutes

  1. Scroll to the footer

Licence details are conventionally published there, naming the regulator and a licence or registration number.

  2. Go to the regulator's own site

Not a link on the casino — open the regulator directly and use its public register.

  3. Match the company name

The licence should be held by the company operating the site, and the register entry should be current, not lapsed.

We do not publish a specific licence authority or number for any operator on this site unless it can be confirmed from the regulator's register, because a wrong licence claim is worse than none at all. Check the operator's own licensing page and the regulator's register — that pair is the only reliable answer, and it takes less time than reading about it.

Legal status of online gambling varies by country and sometimes by region within a country. Confirm what applies where you live before playing. 18+ only.
